Having produced 5 albums and playing for live audiences for over 25 years I have also been a teacher in Western Australian schools for over 30 years. Qualified with a Bachelor of Education (Music Specialist), Police Clearance and Working with Children Check let me help you or your child take guitar playing to the next level.

Unlike a piano, the guitar can be difficult to understand and access. There are no black-and-white keys, just strings and frets!

Initially, we may be happy memorising a few chords and their finger placements but if we are to extend any further we need to master the neck and that takes work.

Fortunately, with the use of computers and apps we can learn to visualise the neck much more effectively. These pictograms if you like can be learned over a period of time, genuine persistence to understand and recognise them embeds them in our subconscious. No longer is playing the guitar a guessing game but we can now attack any note we “hear” confidently.

Improvisation features heavily in my approach to teaching the guitar and is something I would encourage any new aspiring musician to do. Some people play incredible pieces on guitar only to discover they are unable to communicate and enjoy music with others lacking in the most basic understanding of chord harmony and theory. In other words, they have not developed the “inner ear”.

As a teacher of music, one of my roles is to bring out your inner muse, to help you fearlessly explore and develop your own style and go beyond your own expectations.

Many instrumental programmes just focus on memorising a set amount of pieces. Our focus is that students should learn to read and write music along with their playing. Once students can read music they become independent learners and can begin to accelerate their fun and learning.

Keyed Up Music is a full teaching member of ASME (Australian Society of Music Educators). All of our teachers either currently studying music at an Australian University or Conservatorium or have already completed their tertiary musical studies, you can rest assured that your child is receiving the best possible instrumental education.

Keyed Up Music can provide a comprehensive classroom music programme which is well-rounded, dynamic and fun. The cost is a little more than would be to employ a classroom music teacher and we provide a great programme, ongoing support (including liturgical if needed), an instrumental and band programme and ongoing teacher training from our Director of music! All our teachers are qualified music educators. The cost can be paid up front by the school, or shared as a student levy.

Keyed Up Music recognises that running a Primary school is not easy nor is it cheap and so for every student that Keyed Up Music teaches in our instrumental program we will contribute $0.50 per child per lesson back to the school.

Keyed Up Music runs its music programmes during and after school and can schedule its teachers to come and take lessons on a day and time most convenient for the school. A Keyed Up Music programme also offers the opportunity for your school to begin a band or choral programme under the direction of a keyed up music teacher. We will also organise a school music concert at the end of every year.

Caitlyn has progressed very quickly within the year through Mr. Dabbs’ tutelage. He has taught Caitlyn who is naturally shy, to be confident in front of an audience. The guitar lessons are inter-esting, Caitlyn enjoys them immensely & we enjoy listening to her play at at home.

My children look forward to their keyboard lessons every week - they even fight each other over who goes first at practice time! They enjoy being in a class with their friends and as a parent I love watching them learn whilst having fun. The convenience of having lessons at their school is also a huge bonus.

Keyed-Up Music has been welcomed by the parent community as a worthwhile extra curricular experience. It has operated unobtrusively with all or-ganisation being handled by Keyed-Up Music. I appreciate how self-contained the product is and that the children are always eager to go to their music lesson.

We have a large carpeted music room with AC and heating courtesy of EFPS and plenty of space for large classes or friends/parents to sit in during lessons. There’s enough music stands for a symphony and toilet amenities are a short stroll away. There is also a playground, basketball court and undercover area for parents with small children to take advantage of while the older ones strum away!

As with all our venues, our guitar teachers in Fremantle cater to all types of guitar from classical to contemporary to death metal! Our teachers cover all ages and levels from total beginners through to advanced players looking to work through AMEB exams or start gigging. While we predominantly offer one on one tuition, we definitely have the space for larger classes too so drop us a message if you (or you and some friends!) would like to organise a small group lesson.
