    4worldlovers: Volunteers at the garden are planting and harvesting vegetables and herbs all year round. We also pick seasonal fruit and nuts from the mature trees on the site. These include limes, lemons, mulberries, cumquats, bananas (yes), feijoas, figs, olives, pecans and macadamias.

    We host special activities, often in collaboration with other student groups. These include busy bees, BBQs and the Weed Olympics. In March 2021 we co-hosted the first Perth Tomato Festival at Mundijong markets. The WA Governor Kim Beazley and Agriculture Minister Alannah McTiernan were our guests.

    The garden runs workshops on gardening tips, waste management, Edible Weeds and sustainable gardening.

    The gardens are on a site at the Environmental Technology Centre on the eastern side of Murdoch University campus in Perth, Western Australia. There we produce vegetables and herbs in communal garden beds and wicking beds. We also tend fruit and nut orchards.

    In 2008 a group of residents from the Town of Victoria Park came together to discuss how a Community Garden can be formed to provide a venue for growing food and educate locals on gardening and sustainability.

    Following several brainstorming sessions the group visited West Leederville Community Garden and chose to follow the garden’s structure of leasing allotments to individuals as well as providing communal garden spaces such as the fruit orchard, berry patch and frog pond. Use of land in Read Park on Albany Hwy was granted by the Town of Victoria Park council and the garden started to form.

    The Victoria Park Community Garden is lead by a committee responsible for the governance and keeping of financial records which are audited annually. If you are interested in being a part of the committee please use the contact form.

    4worldlovers: The West Leederville Community Garden is always a delightful place to visit, a spacious, calm oasis tucked away from busy Cambridge Street with plenty of birdlife, flowers and opportunities for many activities: potting cuttings for street stalls and Garden events, weeding (multiple opportunities here), composting, planting in the general areas or simply sitting and doing nothing but enjoy the Garden’s unique ambience.

    Most Garden plots look vibrant and energised after a good wet winter. As gardeners know, this is the perfect time to check soil (Too alkaline perhaps? Too acidic? Are there lots of earthworms?) and prepare it for early summer planting. A barrowload or two of compost makes a wonderful difference to creating a healthy environment for seedlings.
